Is umbrella insurance only for the rich?

Umbrella insurance is a type of insurance that many people don’t understand. The name itself is confusing. It certainly is not insurance for your umbrella. But what exactly is it and who should have it remains elusive. At RH Worthington Group in Milford, PA, we are independent insurance agents who work for our customers, and we will provide the information and service you require when making insurance decisions.

What is umbrella insurance?

Umbrella insurance is excess liability coverage. It helps to give you more liability protection than the basic policy that you have. Think of insurance as an umbrella, and your assets are you. The umbrella protects you from the rain, and an umbrella policy protects your assets from legal action against them, whether you are rich or have normal assets.

How does it work?

When legal action is taken against you, the policy that you have with liability coverage will cover up to the policy’s limit. This can be a home, auto, condo, motorcycle, boat, or other policy with liability cover. It is excess coverage, so you must have a policy with liability for it to add additional coverage. It kicks in when you reach your primary policy limit.

Who can benefit from it?

Umbrella insurance is not only for the rich. It is beneficial to anyone who has assets of any sort. You work hard for all the things that you own and the money that you have saved. If you don’t have enough coverage to protect yourself, getting sued could ruin your life. Umbrella insurance provides the extra help you need.
